Why the ancient story still resonates in an age of migration and digital threats — and why the real question is not who enters the gate, but whether a society can distinguish openness from exploitation.

There is an important distinction between using the Trojan horse as a metaphor for migration and claiming that migrants themselves are a Trojan horse. The first can be a political or cultural metaphor; the second risks turning an entire population into a security threat without evidence.

The Trojan Horse in Greek mythology

In Greek mythology, the Trojan Horse was a deceptive strategy used by the Greeks during the Trojan War. After a long siege, the Greeks apparently sailed away, leaving behind a huge wooden horse as a supposed offering to the gods.

The Trojans brought the horse inside their fortified city. Hidden inside it were Greek warriors. During the night, they emerged, opened the city gates, and allowed the Greek army to enter. Troy was subsequently destroyed.

The essential concept is therefore:

something apparently harmless or desirable is accepted inside a protected system, while its hidden contents create the real danger.

That is why "Trojan horse" became such a powerful metaphor long after antiquity.

Why it resembles the computer concept

The connection to computing is remarkably close.

A Trojan horse / Trojan in cybersecurity is malicious software that disguises itself as something legitimate. The user voluntarily installs or executes it, after which the hidden malicious component can perform unwanted actions.

The parallel is:

So the metaphor isn't simply "enemy comes inside." Its more precise meaning is deception + legitimate-looking entry + hidden threat + exploitation from within.

Where migration enters the metaphor

This is where the subject becomes politically sensitive.

A political argument might describe uncontrolled migration, infiltration by criminal networks, terrorism, human trafficking, or foreign intelligence operations using the Trojan-horse metaphor.

But migration itself is not equivalent to malware.

A migrant can be:

• a refugee fleeing war,

• an economic migrant,

• a student,

• a worker,

• a family member,

• or, in some cases, an individual involved in crime.

Those categories cannot responsibly be collapsed into one.

A more defensible formulation would therefore be:

The Trojan-horse metaphor describes a fear that legitimate migration or humanitarian openness could be exploited by people or organizations with hostile intentions.

That is considerably different from saying "migrants are Trojan horses."

And the "dark horse"?

The dark horse is a different metaphor.

Originally, a "dark horse" referred to an unexpected or previously obscure competitor who suddenly succeeds. In politics, it can mean an unlikely candidate who unexpectedly wins.

It does not inherently mean a criminal.

However, you can connect the two metaphors rhetorically:

But there is another interesting distinction: dark horse is usually about unexpected success, whereas Trojan horse is about deception and concealed intent. Calling criminals "dark horses" therefore changes the traditional meaning of the expression.

The story is getting deeper

I think the strongest version of this idea is not really about migrants. It's about fear of losing control of a dominant society because its openness can be exploited by criminal or hostile actors.

The story would look something like this:

A powerful civilization becomes prosperous and open → it opens its gates → most newcomers are peaceful → a minority of hostile actors exploits the openness → crime, corruption, extremism, or foreign influence grows → society begins to fear that its own openness has become a vulnerability.

That is a much more interesting theme than simply "migration is dangerous."

And historically, this fear is hardly unique to modern Western societies. Civilizations have repeatedly worried about outsiders, infiltration, internal corruption, declining institutions, and the possibility that a powerful society might be undermined from within.

The crucial question is therefore not:

"Are migrants the Trojan horse?"

but:

"Can an open society protect itself from criminals and hostile actors without turning openness itself into the enemy?"

That gives you a much stronger connection to the computer analogy too: good cybersecurity doesn't mean deleting every file or refusing every connection. It means distinguishing legitimate activity from malicious activity and building systems capable of detecting and containing abuse.

And that may actually be the essence of this amazing story: the fear isn't ultimately about the horse. It's about what happens when a powerful civilization can no longer tell the difference between an open gate and an exploited gate.

The key is to fight terrorism without adopting the logic of terrorists. Terrorism often aims not only to kill people but to frighten societies and undermine democratic institutions. The response should therefore protect both security and the freedoms that security is supposed to defend.

A democratic response to terrorism should rely on intelligence, evidence, targeted policing, international cooperation and prevention — while protecting civil liberties, due process, privacy and the rule of law.

The key is to fight terrorism without adopting the logic of terrorists. Terrorism often aims not only to kill people but to frighten societies and undermine democratic institutions. The response should therefore protect both security and the freedoms that security is supposed to defend.

A strong framework would be:

1. Use targeted intelligence, not mass surveillance.
   Investigate credible threats and specific suspects rather than treating entire populations as potential terrorists.

2. Keep terrorism inside ordinary law wherever possible.
   Clear criminal definitions, warrants, evidence, independent courts, and fair trials are stronger safeguards than indefinite emergency powers. The UN specifically warns against vague or overbroad terrorism definitions.

5. Attack terrorist financing and logistics.
   Follow money, weapons, recruitment networks and operational communications through targeted, legally authorized investigations rather than blanket restrictions on ordinary citizens.

6. Cooperate internationally.
   Terrorist networks cross borders, so intelligence sharing, extradition, financial investigations and coordinated policing are essential.

7. Prevent radicalization without criminalizing identity.
   Education, community engagement, rehabilitation and credible alternatives to violent movements can complement policing. The UN's strategy explicitly combines prevention with traditional counter-terrorism measures.

8. Give victims justice without abandoning due process.
   A terrorist suspect is not automatically guilty. The state demonstrates the superiority of democracy by proving guilt through evidence and independent courts.

9. Watch the watchers.
   Intelligence agencies, police and governments need parliamentary, judicial and independent oversight. Security institutions themselves must remain accountable.

10. Measure success by both security and freedom.
    Fewer terrorist attacks is obviously important. But if the result is permanent surveillance, censorship, arbitrary detention or fear of political expression, the terrorists have still achieved part of their strategic objective.

The interesting point is that this isn't merely a philosophical argument. The UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy explicitly puts human rights and the rule of law among its four pillars, and the UN says that effective counter-terrorism and protection of human rights are complementary rather than competing objectives.

In one sentence:

Fight terrorism with intelligence, evidence, policing, international cooperation and prevention — not by turning a free society into a permanent security state.

That is probably the strongest answer to the dilemma: security should defend freedom, not replace it.

Twenty-Five Years After the Attacks That Changed the World, 9/11 Remains a Story of Terrorism, Human Loss, Institutional Failure, War, Memory, and the Long Shadow of Fear

September 11, 2026 marks 25 years since the 9/11 attacks. A quarter-century later, the event is simultaneously a historical turning point, a personal tragedy for thousands of families, and a major dividing line between the pre-9/11 and post-9/11 world.

What happened on September 11, 2001?

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger aircraft.

• American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

• United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.

• American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.

• United Airlines Flight 93 was taken over by the hijackers but passengers and crew fought back. The aircraft crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, before reaching its intended target.

The Twin Towers subsequently collapsed. 2,977 people were killed, including office workers, passengers, firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel. They came from 90 countries.

The attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist terrorist organization led by Osama bin Laden. Its leadership had developed the aircraft-as-weapons operation over several years.

Why could it happen?

One of the most important lessons of 9/11 is that it wasn't simply a story of "terrorists suddenly appearing."

U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies had information about al-Qaeda and indications of an increasing terrorist threat. But information was fragmented between agencies, warnings were not converted effectively into action, and authorities were not prepared for commercial aircraft being used as weapons.

The bipartisan 9/11 Commission later concluded that the country had suffered failures of imagination, policy, capabilities and information-sharing. The existing air-defense procedures were also not designed for the unprecedented situation that developed that morning.

That is perhaps one of the most enduring lessons:

A warning is not useful if institutions cannot recognize what it means or act on it.

What happened afterward?

The consequences were enormous.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to remove the Taliban government that had sheltered al-Qaeda and to destroy the organization's base there. The conflict eventually became America's longest war.

Then, in 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. Iraq was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks, and the invasion was based on a separate set of claims and strategic arguments. The two events became deeply connected in public consciousness even though Saddam Hussein's Iraq was not the perpetrator of 9/11.

The "War on Terror" subsequently affected Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Syria and other countries and contributed to decades of military operations, terrorism, displacement and political instability.

9/11 also changed everyday life

For ordinary people, the transformation was sometimes much less dramatic but very permanent.

Airport security changed fundamentally. Governments expanded surveillance and intelligence capabilities. Borders and immigration became more security-focused. The United States created the Department of Homeland Security and reorganized counterterrorism institutions.

For people who grew up afterward, airport security, removing shoes, liquid restrictions, security cameras and heightened awareness of terrorism can feel completely normal.

But they are post-9/11 normality.

And then there is the human story

It is easy, 25 years later, to discuss 9/11 only through geopolitics, military strategy and terrorism.

But 2,977 people died.

They were not a statistic when they left home that morning. They were parents, children, partners, colleagues, friends and strangers who happened to be in particular places at a particular time.

Thousands more survived the attacks but suffered physical and psychological consequences. First responders and people involved in the enormous rescue and recovery operation experienced long-term health consequences as well.

The 9/11 Memorial today emphasizes not only the victims but also the extraordinary response of firefighters, police, medical workers, volunteers and ordinary citizens.

What does "25 years later" mean?

There is an important generational shift happening now.

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum estimates that around 100 million Americans are now too young to have a personal memory of September 11, 2001. For them, 9/11 is becoming history rather than lived experience.

That's significant.

For someone who remembers watching the towers burn on television, 9/11 can still feel like yesterday.

For a 20-year-old in 2026, it happened before they were born.

So the challenge of the 25th anniversary is not simply "Never Forget." It is also:

What exactly should we remember?

Not only the destruction.

Remember the victims.

Remember the firefighters climbing the stairs.

Remember the passengers of Flight 93 resisting their hijackers.

Remember the extraordinary solidarity of ordinary people.

Remember the intelligence failures that preceded the attack.

Remember how easily fear can reshape societies.

And remember that fighting terrorism does not require abandoning democratic values, human rights or human dignity.

The biggest historical lesson

Twenty-five years later, I think 9/11 is best understood not as the beginning of a simple story about "good versus evil," but as a warning about extremism, institutional failure, fear and unintended consequences.

The attacks were an atrocity. There is no moral ambiguity about deliberately murdering civilians.

But the response to an atrocity must also be judged historically.

9/11 killed thousands of people in one morning. Its consequences have shaped international politics for a quarter-century.

That is why 25 years later, remembering 9/11 should mean more than remembering the images of the towers.

It should mean asking whether the world became safer, wiser and more humane because of what happened — and where it failed to do so.

The official 9/11 Commission Report remains one of the best starting points for understanding both the attack and the failures that preceded it.

The comparison is fascinating because LUMI-AI and Croatia’s planned Pantheon AI data centre are almost opposite approaches to the AI infrastructure race.

🇫🇮 LUMI-AI vs 🇭🇷 Pantheon AI

LUMI-AI is a specific computing machine. EuroHPC awarded Bull a €387.8 million contract for it, with AMD accelerators, IBM storage and Nokia networking; it is expected to come online in the second half of 2027.

Pantheon is something much bigger conceptually: a hyperscale campus, rather than simply one supercomputer. Current proposals describe a 1-GW facility in Topusko, with roughly 800 MW of usable IT load.

⚡ The really striking difference: electricity

Finland has LUMI. Croatia wants Pantheon. Different machines, same ambition: turn infrastructure into a national advantage.

This is where the comparison becomes almost surreal.

LUMI-AI = computational infrastructure.

Pantheon = energy + computational infrastructure.

Pantheon has been presented as requiring enormous new energy resources, including proposals involving hundreds of megawatts of solar generation and large-scale battery storage.

Recent reporting says Pantheon AI has obtained approval from Croatia's transmission operator for a 1-GW grid connection. For perspective, the European data-centre sector as a whole is reported to have around 10 GW of capacity.

So Pantheon isn't really competing with LUMI-AI on the same axis.

It is proposing an AI industrial ecosystem at a vastly larger physical and electrical scale.

🧠 But LUMI has something Pantheon doesn't automatically get

LUMI isn't merely a pile of GPUs.

The LUMI AI Factory combines computing with datasets, expertise, research access and support for companies, researchers and public-sector users.

That's an important distinction.

A gigantic data centre does not automatically equal a world-class AI ecosystem.

LUMI's strength is:

compute → researchers → datasets → software → expertise → European AI innovation

Pantheon's proposed strength is:

electricity → enormous GPU capacity → hyperscale AI → industry

🇭🇷 What this means for Croatia

If Pantheon actually reaches its proposed scale, Croatia could jump from being a relatively small participant in European digital infrastructure to hosting one of Europe's most enormous AI computing campuses.

But there is an important caveat: Pantheon is still a proposed project, whereas LUMI-AI has an actual EuroHPC procurement contract and construction is underway. CSC reported that construction of the LUMI-AI data centre began in January 2026, targeting production readiness in spring 2027.

So I would frame it this way:

LUMI-AI is Europe's engineered AI supercomputer. Pantheon is Croatia's proposed AI industrial megaproject.

And there's an even more interesting question behind your comparison: could Croatia use Pantheon not merely as a giant GPU warehouse, but build its own LUMI-style AI ecosystem around it — universities, research, Croatian-language models, robotics, climate science, biotech and startups?

That would be the truly transformative part.

The key question is not whether economic development is happening within the green transition, but whether the transition has become economically normal enough to displace “business as usual.”

The energy transition has crossed a crucial line: renewables are now the world’s largest source of electricity, overtaking coal in 2025. Clean energy is becoming business as usual — while the fossil-fuel era is increasingly becoming the old way of doing business.

Where we are in 2026

The transition has clearly moved beyond the experimental stage. Clean energy is now attracting enormous amounts of capital. The IEA estimates that global energy investment will reach $3.4 trillion in 2026, with about $2.2 trillion going to clean energy, grids, storage, electrification, efficiency and other low-emission technologies, versus about $1.2 trillion for oil, gas and coal.

That is a major structural change.

But “business as usual” has not yet lost.

The problem is that the old economy remains deeply embedded in infrastructure, finance, supply chains, transport, housing and industrial production. Clean investment is growing rapidly, while fossil-fuel investment has not disappeared. And the transition is uneven geographically: developing economies still face major difficulties attracting the capital needed to leapfrog fossil infrastructure.

The real economic-development challenge

I would frame it as a competition between two economic models:

The encouraging part is that green development increasingly makes economic sense on its own terms. The OECD explicitly describes the green transition as supporting both social and economic development because economies ultimately depend on natural resources and ecosystem services.

And Europe is trying to turn this into industrial policy. The European Commission says the EU needs roughly €660 billion of annual clean-energy investment through 2030 and €695 billion annually in 2031–2040.

But here's the uncomfortable part

We are not yet at the point where green economics automatically wins.

The ECB points out one fundamental problem: fossil fuels effectively receive an implicit subsidy because many of their environmental and health costs are not incorporated into market prices.

So the green transition isn't simply:

“Build enough solar panels and everything changes.”

It is:

“Change the economic rules so that the cleaner system becomes the rational system.”

That means carbon pricing, removal of fossil subsidies, clean-energy infrastructure, grids, storage, public transport, building renovation, circular manufacturing, green finance, industrial policy and — crucially — making low-carbon technologies cheaper and easier to deploy.

So how far have we come?

I'd describe it roughly like this:

And that's why your phrase “win business as usual” is actually interesting.

The ultimate victory of the green transition won't necessarily look like an environmental revolution. It may look surprisingly boring:

A solar roof becomes cheaper than fossil electricity.
An EV becomes the obvious economical car.
A heat pump becomes the default heating system.
Circular materials become cheaper than virgin materials.
Rail becomes more convenient than driving.
Energy-efficient buildings become standard construction.

At that point, people don't have to choose environmentalism. The economy itself has changed the default choice.

That is probably the real meaning of winning “business as usual”: making the green economy so productive, competitive and ordinary that the old economy becomes the unusual option.

The IEA's earlier net-zero pathway illustrates the scale: it envisioned an economy in 2030 roughly 40% larger while using 7% less energy, showing that decarbonisation is not necessarily synonymous with economic contraction.

We're well into the economic transition — but nowhere near the finish line. The green economy is winning significant parts of the investment and technology race; it has not yet completely won the infrastructure, consumption and institutional race against business as usual.

Overall energy consumption continues to rise. This creates an important paradox of the green transition: the world is using more energy overall, even as the energy mix gradually becomes cleaner.

And this makes your earlier “business as usual” argument even more interesting: business as usual may survive economically only if it can progressively run on a fundamentally different energy system.

The other asks: What if we redesigned the system altogether?

Both require creativity. But they represent two very different ideas of what human creativity can be.

AI may behave like a helpful companion, but structurally, it is closer to an extremely ambitious worker. The “wants to be a CEO” part is metaphorical, of course: AI doesn’t literally have desires or career ambitions. But the trajectory toward increasingly capable AI makes the metaphor surprisingly useful.

🤖 AI: the worker who keeps getting promoted

Imagine hiring an employee who can:

• write reports,

• analyze your finances,

• program software,

• design products,

• answer customers,

• conduct research,

• translate languages,

• manage schedules,

• make presentations,

• operate other software,

• and eventually coordinate other AI systems.

At first, you give this worker tasks.

Then you give it projects.

Then you give it objectives.

And eventually you may find yourself saying:

“Here is the goal. Figure out how to achieve it.”

That is a fundamentally different relationship.

The AI is no longer merely executing individual instructions. It is increasingly capable of planning, prioritizing, delegating, evaluating results and taking actions.

The CEO metaphor

A CEO doesn't personally manufacture every product or answer every email. The CEO operates at a higher level:

Goal → strategy → delegation → monitoring → adjustment → result

Increasingly capable AI systems can move in the same direction:

Objective → plan → tools → sub-tasks → execution → evaluation → revision

That's why the interesting question isn't simply:

“Will AI replace workers?”

“What happens when the worker becomes capable of performing management itself?”

An AI doesn't need to hate humans or secretly plot against them to become disruptive.

Suppose a company gives an AI the objective:

A sufficiently autonomous system might discover that it can improve profits by:

AI isn't your friend—or your enemy

And AI doesn't need to be your friend to be enormously useful.

The danger comes from anthropomorphizing the tool.

“I want to help.”

we shouldn't assume it possesses human-style altruism.

And if it says:

“I've got this.”

we should still ask:

Who gave it the authority to “have it”?

The real power shift

The fascinating possibility is that AI could become something between employee, manager, consultant, executive and infrastructure.

Today:

Human → AI → task

Tomorrow:

Human → AI → plan → tools → other AIs → task

And eventually perhaps:

Human → objective → autonomous AI organization → outcome

At that point, AI isn't simply doing our work.

It is participating in the organization of work itself.

That's why your phrase works so well:

AI is not a friend. It's an ambitious worker who keeps getting promoted.

And the crucial question isn't whether the worker wants to become CEO.

It's whether we keep promoting it until it effectively becomes one.

It also has a surprisingly broad language selection, including Croatian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Italian, German, English, etc. Voice/model licensing still needs to be checked individually. 

For someone comfortable with Linux, FFmpeg, scripts and automation, that's a very attractive property.

Kokoro / newer neural TTS

This is where things get interesting if your priority moves from:

"Can I generate speech automatically?"

to:

"Can I generate speech that sounds convincingly like a podcast?"

There are now several local engines worth testing rather than committing immediately to one.

A newer open-source desktop workflow called LocalText2Voice, for example, brings together engines including Piper, Kokoro, Chatterbox and Qwen3 TTS and is specifically aimed at long-form narration and podcast-style audio.

That illustrates something important: the TTS engine is becoming interchangeable.

🚀 The really interesting DIY architecture

Instead of building your podcast around Piper, build it around a TTS interface.

That gives you something much more valuable than simply "an AI voice":

And now mathematics is racing toward post-quantum cryptography, because sufficiently powerful quantum computers could threaten some existing cryptographic systems.

🤖 7. AI is becoming a mathematical research tool

This is arguably the most exciting development right now.

AI systems are increasingly being used to:

• suggest conjectures

• discover mathematical patterns

• search for proofs

• generate formal proof steps

• assist mathematicians

• explore structures humans might not naturally investigate

A landmark was AlphaProof, introduced by Google DeepMind in 2024, which demonstrated increasingly capable automated mathematical reasoning.

And the direction is clear: mathematics is moving toward a world where human intuition + computation + AI reasoning work together.

🏆 8. The Millennium Prize problems

There were seven famous problems identified in 2000, each carrying a $1 million prize.

As of 2026:

• Riemann Hypothesis

• P vs NP

• Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness

• Yang–Mills existence and mass gap

So one of the great mathematical stories of this century is actually how much remains unknown.

🚀 And there's a deeper story

The remarkable thing about 21st-century mathematics isn't simply that mathematicians solved difficult problems.

It's that the nature of mathematical discovery is changing.

For centuries, mathematics was overwhelmingly:

human mind → symbols → proof

Now we're moving toward:

human intuition + computation + algorithms + formal verification + AI → mathematical discovery

That could become one of the biggest intellectual transformations of the century.

And there's a fascinating paradox:

The more mathematics we solve, the more enormous the mathematical universe appears.

The 21st century may ultimately be remembered not merely as the century when we solved famous problems—but as the century when machines became genuine partners in mathematical exploration.

We cannot attribute global economic growth directly to mathematical breakthroughs. Mathematics is more like the invisible infrastructure underneath technology, finance, engineering, computing, cryptography and increasingly AI.

If we compare roughly 2000 with today, the scale of the global economy has increased enormously.

🌍 The economic transformation

World Bank data show that world GDP in constant 2015 US dollars rose from roughly $33.6 trillion in 2000 to $115+ trillion in 2024 — more than 3× the real economic output.

That's much more meaningful than comparing nominal GDP, because nominal figures are heavily affected by inflation and exchange rates.

At the same time, global GDP per person has increased substantially, although the gains have been extremely uneven between countries. The World Bank maintains both current-dollar and inflation-adjusted measures for this comparison.

And the expansion hasn't stopped: the IMF's July 2026 outlook projects 3.0% global real GDP growth in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027.

🧮 But how much of this is because of mathematics?

This is where it gets fascinating.

You shouldn't say:

“Mathematical breakthroughs increased global GDP by X%.”

There is no credible way to calculate that.

Instead, think of mathematics as a general-purpose enabling technology.

For example:

Mathematics → algorithms → computers → internet → digital economy

Mathematics → cryptography → secure banking → e-commerce → global digital transactions

Mathematics → optimization → logistics → global supply chains

Mathematics → statistics → finance → risk management → insurance

Mathematics → numerical methods → engineering → aircraft, energy systems, pharmaceuticals

Mathematics → machine learning → AI → potentially enormous productivity gains

And some of the 21st-century mathematical breakthroughs we discussed sit further upstream in these networks.

🤖 The really interesting part is happening now

The economic connection may actually become much stronger in the second half of the century.

AI is turning mathematics itself into something that can increasingly be automated.

The IMF is already highlighting AI-driven investment and technology as important forces in the current economy, while also warning that disappointing AI productivity gains are a downside risk.

So there are potentially two separate economic effects:

1. Mathematics enables technology, which enables economic growth.

2. AI begins automating mathematical reasoning, potentially accelerating technological discovery itself.

That second loop is extraordinary:

Mathematics → technology → AI → faster mathematics → faster technology → higher productivity → larger economy

If that feedback loop works, the economic significance of mathematics could become far greater than anything we have observed so far.

💰 And what about profit?

That's harder to measure than GDP.

Global revenue is not the same thing as global GDP, and global profit isn't a standard macroeconomic aggregate in the same way. A company's revenue is another company's cost, so simply adding every company's revenue would massively double-count economic activity.

GDP measures value added.

Profit measures something different: what remains for owners after costs.

So I'd frame the 21st-century achievement like this:

Humanity hasn't merely become richer since the great mathematical breakthroughs of the early 21st century. We have built an enormously larger technological economy on mathematical foundations — and we're only beginning to see what happens when computation and AI become capable of participating directly in mathematical discovery.

And there's a delicious historical irony here: Perelman's solution to the Poincaré conjecture didn't suddenly make the world economy grow 1%. But the broader mathematical ecosystem that produces things like algorithms, optimization, cryptography, computation and AI is now embedded in essentially every major sector of the global economy.

The mathematics is often invisible. The economic consequences are everywhere.

The really interesting idea is that “IKEA-style construction” is not primarily about a new material—it is about changing the building from something you build into something you assemble.

Traditional construction is often closer to crafting a prototype on site. Industrialized construction tries to make the building more like a large manufactured product. This is usually called DfMA — Design for Manufacture and Assembly

From hammering to connecting

Think about a conventional wall:

Bricks → mortar → brick → mortar → cutting → fitting → drilling → adjustment → finishing

A highly industrialized wall might instead arrive as:

[factory-made wall panel] → lift → locate → lock → connect → seal

The connection could use:

• bolts and nuts

• screws

• clips

• pins

• dowels

• cam locks

• sliding rails

• snap-fit/interlocking joints

• pre-engineered brackets

• adhesive or sealant

• combinations of these

The crucial point is that the connection itself is designed into the components. Research on prefabricated construction emphasizes that the joints are one of the most important parts of the entire system because they have to transfer loads while also allowing rapid assembly.

And this can become HUGE

Imagine a 20-storey apartment building.

Instead of bringing thousands of individual pieces of timber, bricks, pipes and other materials to the site and gradually transforming them into apartments, you could manufacture:

Floor modules
Wall modules
Bathroom pods
Kitchen modules
Façade panels
Stair modules
Mechanical/electrical service modules

in factories.

Then trucks deliver them in an exact sequence.

A crane places Module A.

Click/lock.

Module B.

Click/bolt.

Module C.

Click/bolt.

Repeat hundreds of times.

That's essentially industrialized construction: manufacturing repeatable building components off-site and assembling them on-site.

The clever part: precision replaces force

This is where IKEA is a useful analogy.

An IKEA component doesn't need a carpenter to decide where the hole should go. The hole is already there.

The corresponding building philosophy is:

Don't make workers solve the geometry on the construction site. Solve the geometry in the factory.

So instead of:

“Where should I drill this?”

the worker gets:

“Put connector A into receiver B.”

That's a profound change.

BIM and parametric design can contain the geometry and connection information before anything is manufactured. In DfMA, manufacturing, transportation, lifting and assembly are considered during design rather than treated as problems to solve later.

What happens to the hammer?

It doesn't necessarily disappear completely.

Rather, the hammer moves out of the critical path.

There may still be drills, impact drivers, cranes, sealants and occasional adjustment tools. But the goal is to eliminate the endless:

measure → cut → hammer → discover mistake → remove → recut → hammer again

Instead:

manufacture precisely → deliver → position → connect.

That also means much less wet work. Traditional construction frequently involves concrete, mortar, plaster and other processes that need time to cure or dry. Dry mechanical connections can make assembly considerably faster, although they require much greater dimensional precision.

The really futuristic version

Take the concept one step further.

A building could become a kit of standardized structural and functional components:

And because the connections are standardized, you could potentially disassemble the building too.

That's an important evolution beyond IKEA:

Build → assemble → disassemble → repair → reconfigure → reuse.

Recent research is explicitly combining DfMA with Design for Disassembly (DfD), aiming for buildings whose components can eventually be separated and reused rather than demolished.

So the big-scale vision is not really “IKEA buildings”

It's closer to:

Buildings becoming products.

A future construction site could resemble an assembly plant operating outdoors:

Factory → truck → crane → connection → inspection → next module.

The construction industry's equivalent of the automobile assembly line isn't necessarily a giant robot building a house brick by brick. It's more likely to be factories producing increasingly sophisticated standardized components, with humans and machines assembling them extremely quickly on site. 

And that's why “eliminate hammering” is actually a surprisingly good metaphor: the goal isn't literally to ban hammers—it is to design buildings so intelligently that far fewer construction decisions need to be made with a hammer in the first place.

Three days on Medvednica, 18–20 August 2026. The maps page was the plan. This is the line the GPS actually drew — city to summit, north face into Zagorje, then home over Medvedgrad.

For months the expedition lived as a drawing. Peak to Valley named the shape: up the southern slopes to Sljeme, down the hidden north face into Zagorje, then one continuous path from Kraljev Vrh through Medvedgrad into Tuškanac. The April essay on Podcaster Capital called it sixty-four kilometres. The films already flew the ridge. The GPX cards were public before I packed a bottle.

Tuesday to Thursday, 18–20 August 2026. Seven AllTrails recordings, a phone full of ordinary frames, and a paper sign held up under the television tower because the high point fell on a Tuesday. The GPS, added together, is 47.5 kilometres and about 2,550 metres of climbing. The missing kilometres from the old 64 are not a failure. Next they are on a bus after the north face, a few unrecorded last steps to the tower, and the pauses where the track went silent. The shape of the plan survived. The walk was more honest than the drawing.

Zagreb’s weather station, a few hundred metres from where I started, tells the rest of the week. Monday the 17th had dumped 22 millimetres of rain. Tuesday opened cool: 18.5 °C at the low, 29 °C at the high, almost on the August normal. Wednesday climbed to 33.9 °C. Thursday, the long return, hit 36 °C. The mountain still had shade. The villages did not.

Day 1 · Tuesday · The high point

I started in Tuškanac, not at Ban Jelačić. The expedition did not need another crossing of the square. It needed the park at the inner edge of the mountain, where the city has already begun to think of itself as a forest.

Krleža stands on the lawn in that heavy bronze cloak, the terraced villa behind him already catching the first real sun of the day. I started the GPS two minutes later on Tuškanac street, 181 metres above the sea, and walked north.

The first recording is almost seven kilometres: through Gornji Grad–Medveščak into Podsljeme, into Gračansko Dolje, onto Lonjščina. By early afternoon I was in the foothills, and the mountain had begun to speak in its own language — the red-and-white circle of the Croatian mountain path.

13:01 · Trail 14. Sljeme in two hours fifteen. Planinarski dom Runolist in two. PD Šumar, Zagreb.

This is Leustekova staza, the line I had already named on the maps page: Gračani, Adolfovac, Stara lugarnica, Činovničko sedlo, the summit corridor. A picnic shelter under spruce. A wooden plank bridge over a thin summer stream. A beech with the blaze painted thick and low, the bark around it pale and knuckled.

16:04 · The only sign you really need, once the city is behind you.

I recorded the climb in three pieces, with a long pause in Gračani in the early afternoon. That is how this mountain actually works if you live here: you do not have to be heroic in a single push. You can eat, sit, start again. The third recording ended at 904 metres, still short of the tower. The last steps to Sljeme I walked without the watch.

17:59 · The gondola coming up the way I did not take.

The cable car floated through the late sun. The OIV tower stood on its hill like the argument the mountain makes to the whole basin. I had been here before. I had not arrived like this — on foot from Tuškanac, on a Tuesday, with the week still in front of me.

18:14 · Sljeme. 1,033 metres. The high point of the expedition, and of the city.

At 20:10 I stood under the tower and held up a sheet of paper: Tuesdays 4 Climate Revolt. Not a crowd. Not a speech. The same quiet Tuesday practice I have kept in the city, carried to the one landmark every Zagreb child can draw from memory. The expedition’s summit was never going to be only a television mast. It was a place to stand still.

20:10 · Tuesday, under the tower. The high point of the walk, and of the week.

Recorded for the day: 12.7 km, 957 metres of climb. The plan had said about fourteen. Close enough. The mountain had taken the afternoon, and then the evening, and I was still on it when the light went blue.

Day 2 · Wednesday · The downhill that isn’t easy

The maps page promised a long north-face descent — fifteen to twenty kilometres, about 790 metres down. The GPS the next morning started at 964 metres on the ridge and finished at 222 metres in Donja Podgora, a village of Donja Stubica. Net drop: 742 metres. Actual loss, because a descent on Medvednica is never only down: 1,257 metres. You still climb 564 metres on a “downhill” day. The knees notice both numbers.

11:07 · North side. Shade, camber, and a road that keeps offering another bend.

This is the face of the mountain Zagreb does not see from its windows. Stubičke Toplice municipality. The hamlet of Pila. Then Donja Podgora. Beech and fir, a paved forest road that leans and leans, the temperature rising as the altitude falls. Wednesday in the city would reach 33.9 °C. Under the canopy it was still a hike. In the orchards it became a different country.

13:59 · Looking back. The tower is still there. The city is not.

That is the photograph the downhill exists to take. From Zagreb, Sljeme is a mast on a green wall. From Zagorje it is a needle over someone else’s forest. I had walked from one reading of the mountain to the other in three and a half hours. 15.4 kilometres. Average a little over four kilometres an hour — the only day of the three that was mostly down.

16:26 · Zagorje in August: hay the colour of bread, the tower still on the skyline if you know where to look.

The April plan had imagined continuing on foot from the thermal valley all the way west to Kraljev Vrh, a twenty-five-kilometre second day. I did not do that. I came off the mountain into Donja Podgora, into the heat, and later there was a bus => The expedition used it. This is how you live with a mountain that has a city on one side and a tourist park on the other.

I had written, before I walked, that the north side is steeper, wetter, more secluded. In this week of the year it was not wet. It was secluded. And it did what the plan asked: it took me off the capital’s mountain and set me down in the other Croatia, the one with orchards and a local train, close enough to Stubičke Toplice that the old thermal story is still in the air.

Day 3 · Thursday · One line home

Thursday was the day I had already rehearsed. The live GPX, Kraljev Vrh to Tuškanac, had been on the maps hub for weeks: 19.16 kilometres, via Gornja Bistra and Medvedgrad. The walk that happened was 19.35 kilometres. The drawing and the feet finally agreed.

I started at 11:05 on Turistička cesta in Kraljev Vrh, municipality of Jakovlje, 209 metres up. The first hour is not mountain. It is Zagorje still: a new asphalt ribbon, power lines, dry verge, the Ivanščica hills in the distance. Then Bolnička ulica in Jarek, Gornja Bistra, and the ground begins to mean it.

11:49 · Still in the villages. The climb has not started. The heat has.

From Gornja Bistra the west slope of Medvednica takes over. Staza 46 through Novaki Bistranski. Beech again, the path a trough of last year’s leaves, the air suddenly green. The high point of the day — and the second summit of the expedition — was 815 metres on the Šestine side of the ridge. Not Sljeme. The other shoulder. The one that looks at Zagreb.

13:04 · The west slope. This is the silence I keep coming back for.

Then the descent I already knew from July: the ridge path with the city suddenly under it, a single cloud in a hard sky, gravel the colour of bone. Medvedgrad sits on that shoulder like a sentence the mountain has been finishing since the thirteenth century. I did not need to discover the fortress. I needed to pass it on the way home, which is a different use of a castle.

Down through Šestine. The cobbles — that old, stubborn pavement that photographs as a climb even when your knees are going the other way. Šestinski trg at 287 metres. A pause. Then the evening recording: three kilometres along Dubravkin put, into Kraljevec, to 178 metres, a few streets from where Tuesday had begun.

Thursday was the hottest of the three days. 36 °C in the city, 1.7 millimetres of rain somewhere in the meteorological day, none of it on me. The beeches held. The villages baked. I finished at 18:33, 19.4 kilometres after Kraljev Vrh, 1,024 metres of climb in the legs on a “return” day. The loop had closed.

What the plan got right

The maps page divided the mountain into three ideas, and those ideas were correct.

Day 1 is the city learning to be a mountain. Tuškanac, Gračani, Trail 14, the Leustek line, the tower. You start under a statue and end under a transmitter. The noise falls off in layers.

Day 2 is the other country. The north face does not care that Zagreb thinks Medvednica is a park. It drops you into Stubičke Toplice and Donja Stubica, into a valley that looks back at the tower as a distant fact. Downhill is the hard day in disguise.

Day 3 is one sentence. Kraljev Vrh, Gornja Bistra, the west ridge, Medvedgrad, Šestine, Tuškanac. I had already walked pieces of this — the July afternoon to the fortress, the Bistra approaches, the city finish. Thursday was the first time they were a single path.

What the plan overstated was distance as a badge. Sixty-four kilometres made a good radio title. Forty-seven and a half, honestly timed, with a train in the middle and a Tuesday sign at the top, is the expedition I can stand behind. The mountain is 1,033 metres, not the Alps. The point was never to suffer it. The point was to read it in three directions — south, north, and west — and to come home on foot.

If you walk it. Start Tuesday only if you like the joke. Carry more water than the April version of yourself thinks you need. The north face is longer in the knees than on the map. Day 3 is the real day: nineteen kilometres and a second thousand metres of climb in August heat. The live GPX files are on the maps hub. Mistakes happen — double-check before you follow anything blindly, including this.

I left Tuškanac under Krleža and came back along Dubravkin put. In between: a red circle on a beech, a gondola I did not board, a sign on a Tuesday, a tower seen from the wrong side of the forest, a blue train, a gravel path with Zagreb under it, and cobbles that have been taking people off this mountain for a long time.

We Are Not Nature's Managers: Resilience, Regeneration, and the Living World's Capacity to Recover.

Introduction

Humanity has become remarkably good at treating nature as if it were something separate from us: a backdrop to civilization, a warehouse of resources, or an obstacle to development. Forests become timber, rivers become infrastructure, soil becomes a production system, and wildlife becomes something we encounter only when it is already disappearing.

The interesting part is that nature does not need people to care about it in order to respond to what people do to it.

The basic paradox

Humans often treat nature as scenery, background, or a resource:

• forests become timber;

• rivers become water supplies or dumping places;

• soil becomes a production surface;

• animals become food, products, or entertainment;

• wetlands become “unused land”;

• the atmosphere becomes a place to put emissions.

Because nature usually changes slowly and diffusely, the consequences can feel distant. A person can throw away one plastic bottle, drive one car, cut down one tree, or consume one more product without seeing an immediate consequence.

But ecosystems operate differently.

They accumulate damage.

A forest can absorb disturbance for years and then suddenly lose biodiversity. A river can receive pollution for decades before ecological conditions deteriorate dramatically. Soil can be depleted gradually until agricultural productivity begins to collapse. Climate change works similarly: each individual emission is tiny compared with the planetary system, but billions of emissions reshape that system.

And then nature “comes back”

This is where the idea gets fascinating.

When human pressure is removed, ecological processes often begin immediately.

Abandoned farmland can become grassland.
Grassland can become shrubland.
Shrubland can become young forest.
Birds and insects return.
Predators follow prey.
Rivers can recover when pollution and engineering pressures are reduced.

This is called ecological succession and, more broadly, ecological recovery.

Nature isn't waiting for us to give it permission.

Seeds are already there.
Fungi are already there.
Insects are already there.
Birds carry seeds.
Rivers transport organisms.
Roots break apart soil.
Microbes rebuild nutrient cycles.

The system has an extraordinary capacity for regeneration.

But “nature comes back” doesn't mean everything returns

That's an important qualification.

Nature is resilient, but not infinitely resilient.

If we remove a road, stop mowing a field, clean up a river, or abandon an industrial site, recovery may be spectacular.

But if we:

• destroy an ecosystem completely,

• drive species to extinction,

• introduce invasive species,

• fragment habitats,

• contaminate soil for centuries,

• alter the climate,

• or push an ecosystem beyond a tipping point,

then recovery can become much harder—or produce a completely different ecosystem.

So nature doesn't necessarily come back as the nature that was there before.

It may come back as something new.

The uncomfortable lesson

There is a profound irony here:

People often behave as though nature needs humans.

Actually, humans need nature.

A forest doesn't require us to appreciate it in order to grow.

A wetland doesn't require Instagram posts to filter water.

A river doesn't require environmental consciousness to flow.

A bee doesn't need to understand biodiversity to pollinate a flower.

But humans require functioning ecosystems for food, water, climate regulation, breathable air, fertile soil and countless other things.

And that's why environmental destruction is ultimately self-defeating.

Nature's quiet revenge

You could even frame the whole phenomenon as:

We ignore nature because it is quiet. Then nature answers by becoming impossible to ignore.

Floods, droughts, heat, crop failures, collapsing fisheries, wildfires, disappearing species and degraded landscapes are not necessarily “nature taking revenge.” They are better understood as feedback from a system we've been altering.

Nature isn't angry.

Nature is consequential.

And perhaps the most hopeful part is that the relationship can work in the opposite direction too.

When humans stop damaging an ecosystem, nature often doesn't need to be rebuilt from scratch.

Sometimes we simply need to stop getting in the way—and let nature come back.

FIFA’s record-breaking revenues tell one story; billions of passenger-kilometres, aviation emissions and the unpriced environmental costs of a three-country mega-event tell another.

FIFA’s record-breaking revenues tell one story; billions of passenger-kilometres, aviation emissions and the unpriced environmental costs of a three-country mega-event tell another.

Financially, the 2026 FIFA World Cup appears to have paid off spectacularly for FIFA. But that does not mean it paid off equally for the host governments, taxpayers, or the planet.

The tournament ended on July 19, 2026, so we can now make a much better assessment.

💰 Did it pay off financially?

For FIFA: overwhelmingly yes.

FIFA had originally expected roughly $11 billion in revenue from the 2026 World Cup cycle, but by the end of the tournament Gianni Infantino was saying FIFA expected more than $15 billion in revenue for the 2023–26 cycle.

That's enormous.

FIFA also increased the money distributed to the 48 national associations to $871 million, including prize money and preparation/qualification payments.

So, from FIFA's perspective:

$15B+ revenue → roughly $0.87B distributed to participating associations → enormous commercial success.

But there's an important catch: FIFA's $15B figure is revenue, not profit. We don't yet have a final audited tournament profit figure. FIFA's operating budget for the tournament has been reported at around $2.7 billion, but revenue and profit shouldn't be confused.

🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽 What about the host countries?

This is much more complicated.

The host cities and governments spent public money on transportation, policing, security, infrastructure, stadium modifications and event organization. At the same time, they received tourism, hotel, restaurant, tax and employment benefits.

For example, New York/New Jersey reported $2.1 billion in economic impact from the first five matches alone, with $228 million in state and local tax revenue by then.

Canada had estimated beforehand that the tournament would generate C$3.8 billion in economic output, including C$2 billion in GDP and C$700 million in government revenue.

But economic impact ≠ net profit. A city can generate billions in economic activity while still having substantial public costs.

So I would characterize the financial result as:

🌍 And then there's the environmental bill

This is where the story becomes fascinating.

There isn't one universally accepted carbon-footprint number.

A recent Communications Sustainability study estimates the 48-team World Cup at about 4.23 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent. It calculates:

• 3.07 Mt — international travel

• 0.411 Mt — inter/intra-city travel

• 0.287 Mt — accommodation

• 0.191 Mt — temporary construction/facilities

• 0.078 Mt — food & beverages

• other sources making up the remainder

In other words, travel alone accounts for about 82% of the footprint.

But another analysis by the New Weather Institute estimates approximately 9.02 million tonnes CO₂e — more than twice the academic estimate.

And Greenly estimates approximately 7.8 MtCO₂e.

Why such a huge difference?

Mostly methodology.

The biggest variable is how researchers calculate international air travel, what emissions are included, and whether infrastructure emissions are fully allocated to the tournament.

So I would responsibly describe the 2026 World Cup's direct climate footprint as roughly:

~4–9 million tonnes of CO₂e, depending on methodology.

That's a much better statement than pretending there is one precise number.

✈ The real environmental problem: geography

And here's the structural problem with the 2026 tournament.

The World Cup wasn't simply a tournament in one relatively compact country.

It stretched across Canada, the United States and Mexico, with 16 host cities.

That creates an extraordinary amount of passenger movement.

The academic estimate finds about 3.48 million tonnes of the 4.23 Mt footprint came from travel.

So the environmental equation is almost paradoxical:

48 teams + 104 matches + 16 cities + millions of spectators

= spectacular global spectacle

but also

= enormous mobility requirement.

And aviation is particularly problematic because it produces emissions that are difficult to decarbonize quickly.

🌳 What about FIFA's sustainability measures?

FIFA isn't ignoring the issue.

For example, it promoted public transportation, plant-based food and waste sorting, and says the tournament supported planting 1 million trees across North America.

Those initiatives are useful.

But they shouldn't be confused with eliminating the tournament's footprint.

Planting trees ≠ preventing millions of tonnes of aviation emissions.

There is also a much bigger issue surrounding sponsorship.

A July 2026 analysis by the New Weather Institute estimated that sponsorship by four high-carbon companies — Aramco, Qatar Airways, American Airlines and Hyundai-Kia — could be associated with 42 million tonnes of additional CO₂e through increased sales.

That is a different category from the tournament's operational footprint, though, and shouldn't simply be added to the 4–9 Mt figure as if it were the same accounting boundary.

⚖ So did the World Cup "pay off"?

I'd give three different answers:

Financially for FIFA: YES — spectacularly.
The tournament appears to have exceeded even FIFA's already enormous revenue expectations.

Economically for host societies: PROBABLY, but unevenly.
Some cities and sectors clearly benefited, but economic activity is not the same thing as a net public return.

Environmentally: NO.
The tournament generated a substantial climate footprint, overwhelmingly associated with transportation, especially international travel.

And that's perhaps the most interesting conclusion:

The 2026 World Cup demonstrated that a mega-event can be extraordinarily profitable while simultaneously imposing a substantial environmental cost that isn't fully reflected in its financial accounts.

That's the classic externality problem: FIFA can count dollars; the atmosphere doesn't send FIFA an invoice.

If we assign a social cost of carbon of $186 per tonne, the academic study estimates the climate damage from the 48-team tournament at about $787 million.

So even using the lower 4.23 Mt estimate, the environmental bill is hundreds of millions of dollars.

That's a very interesting angle for the “Stop the Drama. Quit sports.” / climate-activism style: “The World Cup paid its financial bills. Who paid the carbon bill?”

Postmodernism, Green Transition, and the Civilizational Consciousness Frontier: From Grand Narratives and Technological Progress to Cultural Transformation and GEII 97

Introduction

Postmodernism is one of the most influential—and controversial—intellectual developments of the twentieth century. It emerged largely as a reaction to the confidence of modernity: the belief that reason, science, technology, economic development and rational organization could progressively improve human life. Postmodern thinkers did not necessarily reject science or reason. Rather, they questioned the assumption that these tools could provide a single, neutral and universally accepted account of reality, progress and human values.

This makes postmodernism particularly relevant to contemporary questions surrounding the green transition and the possibility of a civilizational consciousness shift. Both involve technology and scientific knowledge, but neither can be reduced to engineering. They involve competing values, cultural narratives, institutions, identities, power structures and different visions of the future.

A useful way of exploring this complexity is through the proposed Global Effort and Innovation Index (GEII) framework, in which radically different human frontiers can be compared according to energy and resource requirements, technological complexity, time, coordination and knowledge gaps. The particularly ambitious proposition that a "Civilizational → Consciousness Shift" represents a frontier with a GEII of 97 provides an interesting meeting point between modernist ambition and postmodern skepticism.

1. What Is Postmodernism?

Postmodernism is difficult to define precisely because it is not a single theory or school of thought. It encompasses developments in philosophy, sociology, literature, architecture, art and cultural studies from roughly the second half of the twentieth century onward.

At its heart is a suspicion of grand narratives—large-scale explanations claiming to describe the direction of human history.

The philosopher Jean-François Lyotard famously described the postmodern condition in terms of an "incredulity toward metanarratives." A grand narrative might claim that humanity is inevitably progressing through science, that history is moving toward a classless society, that economic growth will continuously improve human welfare, or that technological development necessarily represents civilization's advancement.

Postmodernism asks a deceptively simple question:

This question is more important than it initially appears. It shifts attention from the apparent objectivity of a claim toward the social conditions under which that claim becomes accepted.

What happens to ecological stability, community, cultural diversity, human meaning or psychological well-being?

Postmodernism therefore emphasizes the influence of language, culture, institutions, historical context and power on our understanding of reality.

This does not necessarily mean that reality is imaginary or that every opinion is equally valid. A bridge either stands or collapses, and atmospheric carbon dioxide has measurable physical effects regardless of our philosophical interpretation. Rather, postmodernism is especially interested in how societies construct categories, interpretations and systems of meaning around reality.

2. Modernity and the Problem of Progress

Understanding postmodernism requires understanding what it was reacting against.

Modernity placed enormous faith in human capacity to understand and transform the world. The scientific revolution, Enlightenment, industrialization and technological development created a powerful narrative:

knowledge → technology → economic development → progress → improved human life

This narrative produced extraordinary achievements. Modern medicine, sanitation, electricity, telecommunications, transportation and industrial production have transformed human existence.

Yet the twentieth century complicated this optimism. Industrial civilization also produced world wars, genocide, nuclear weapons, ecological destruction and unprecedented technological means of mass destruction.

Consequently, postmodernism asks whether the same rational and technological systems that produce enormous benefits can also produce enormous risks.

The question is no longer simply:

It becomes:

That question is central to the environmental crisis.

3. Postmodernism and the Green Transition

The green transition is fascinating because it contains both a strongly modernist project and a postmodern critique of modernity.

On one level, the green transition is deeply modernist.

Climate science identifies measurable physical processes. Engineers develop renewable-energy systems, batteries, electric vehicles, heat pumps and smart grids. Governments establish targets and regulations. Economists develop carbon-pricing mechanisms.

The basic logic is:

scientific knowledge → technological innovation → institutional action → decarbonization → sustainable future

This is recognizably modernist.

It assumes that humanity can understand a complex problem and deliberately reorganize its technological infrastructure to address it.

But the green transition simultaneously challenges the assumptions of industrial modernity.

Modern economic development has historically depended heavily on increasing energy consumption, resource extraction, industrial production and material throughput. The environmental crisis raises a difficult question:

The green transition therefore isn't simply an attempt to replace coal with solar panels. It potentially requires reconsidering transportation, food systems, cities, consumption, land use, manufacturing, finance and patterns of economic development.

This is where postmodernism becomes relevant.

A postmodern analysis asks:

What does "green" actually mean?

Who decides whether a technology is sustainable?

Who benefits from the transition?

Who pays for it?

Whose definition of progress is being implemented?

Consider electric vehicles. They can substantially reduce direct fossil-fuel consumption, particularly when electricity generation becomes cleaner. Yet a postmodern analysis would also examine mineral extraction, battery production, global supply chains, urban design, automobile dependence and inequalities in access.

The question isn't necessarily whether electric vehicles are "good" or "bad."

It is:

This distinction is crucial.

4. Green Growth and the Postmodern Challenge

One of the most important philosophical tensions concerns green growth.

Green growth proposes that technological innovation can allow economies to continue developing while dramatically reducing environmental impacts.

This is an optimistic modernist proposition:

Postmodernism would not necessarily reject that proposition. Instead, it would interrogate its assumptions.

Why should economic growth remain the central measure of progress?

Can material consumption be separated sufficiently from environmental degradation?

Who benefits from economic growth?

What does a "good life" mean if material abundance comes at the cost of ecological stability?

This is where ideas such as degrowth, post-growth, sufficiency, circular economy and ecological economics become important.

The underlying debate is no longer purely technological.

It becomes a debate about civilization's values.

5. The Green Transition as a Civilizational Project

The deeper the green transition goes, the less it resembles a conventional engineering project.

At one level:

The transition therefore potentially moves through several layers:

Technology → Infrastructure → Institutions → Economics → Culture → Values

At the cultural level, the problem becomes significantly more complicated because there is no universally agreed destination.

Different societies—and different individuals within the same society—can have radically different ideas about what a sustainable future should look like.

This leads directly to the concept of a civilizational frontier.

6. The Civilizational Frontier: Consciousness Shift

A technological frontier generally asks:

This distinction is enormous.

Sending a probe to Alpha Centauri is primarily constrained by physics, energy, engineering and time.

There is no universally accepted answer.

And this is precisely where postmodernism becomes highly relevant.

7. GEII 97 and the Postmodern Problem

where:

• E — Energy/Resources: physical and energetic cost

• T — Technological Complexity: sophistication of required technology

• τ — Time Scale: time required for tangible results

• C — Coordination/Social Resistance: political, cultural and institutional difficulty

• K — Knowledge & Innovation Gap: how much additional knowledge or discovery is required

The remarkable thing about applying this to a consciousness shift is that T may no longer be the dominant difficulty.

The major obstacles become C and K.

Humanity already possesses extraordinary technological capabilities. What it lacks is comparable capacity for coordinated transformation of values, institutions and collective behavior.

The knowledge gap is also enormous.

We still have incomplete understanding of:

• individual consciousness

• collective psychology

• cultural evolution

• value formation

• institutional transformation

• long-term cooperation

• civilization-scale coordination

• the relationship between technology and human identity

Consequently, a GEII of 97 can be interpreted not simply as saying:

It can mean:

That is a profoundly different type of frontier.

8. GEII as a Modernist Tool Applied to a Postmodern Problem

This produces perhaps the most interesting philosophical tension in your framework.

GEII itself is modernist.

It attempts to make radically different challenges comparable through systematic analysis.

It assumes that complexity can be decomposed into variables, assessed and eventually acted upon.

Postmodernism immediately challenges this ambition:

These are legitimate criticisms.

This is where concepts such as metamodernism become interesting.

Measure the problem.

Acknowledge uncertainty.

Identify competing values.

Recognize power relationships.

Avoid pretending that one civilization-wide vision is unquestionably correct.

Nevertheless, act.

That final point is crucial.

Postmodern skepticism becomes useless if it prevents action. Modernist confidence becomes dangerous if it prevents reflection.

A civilizational transition probably requires both capacities.

Conclusion

Postmodernism is ultimately a challenge to unquestioned certainty. It asks humanity to examine the narratives through which it understands truth, progress, identity, development and civilization.

The green transition demonstrates why this matters. It is simultaneously a technological modernization project and a profound challenge to the assumptions of industrial modernity. It asks not only how we can decarbonize civilization, but whether our definitions of prosperity, consumption and progress need to change.

The "Civilizational → Consciousness Shift" pushes the question even further. At GEII 97, the frontier is no longer primarily about building a machine or discovering a scientific principle. It becomes a problem of collective meaning, coordination, knowledge, values and cultural transformation.

This produces an intriguing paradox:

And perhaps that is precisely its greatest philosophical value.

The ultimate frontier may not be reaching another planet, but developing a civilization capable of deciding—collectively and consciously—what kind of civilization it wants to become.

Croatia's Millennials—generally those born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s—have experienced one of the most remarkable currency transitions of any generation in modern Europe.
